  • My blimmin catheter has blocked again, meaning the 5 pints of water I drank to try to flush myself out is still very much inside me.

I’ve not been in bed this early on Christmas Eve since I was about 10, but I’m hoping that I don’t have to call the on call doctors again!

Anyway, we did confer as to what Christmas’y film to watch all together. My proposal of ‘ It’s a Wonderful Life’ fell on deaf ears, and it ended up being a Zombie film where everyone in Britain seemed to end up dead.

Thanks to Amber for her festive suggestion.

Her big sister left the room in shock in the Undead Eye Gouging scene.

Thanks too to Kate and Marky P for inviting me to share a fine bottle of wine at their house, and for Mark’s help getting the Triride wheel on the chair.  They don’t seem to have set it up quite right at the factory, so I can’t get it on alone, at the moment.

Returning from their house, ‘ driving ‘ on the road in my wheelchair at 20 mph was something that  I hadn’t foreseen as being so good.  The mile or so took just a few minutes, which was just brilliant.

The world has definitely become suddenly more accessible – or at least a 30 mile round trip has, that being the range on a full battery.

As I don’t want to tempt fate and run out of power, I’ll start with a 29 mile trip just in case …

I spent about another 2 hours wrapping up presents today, that now being an area of expertise for me. Nonetheless the kids just laugh at my unglamorous approach to decorative wrapping  – I cannot bring myself to use ribbons or those stick on bows, or even labels. I just write on the presents with felt pen ( usually daft comments for my own amusement ).

I can keep myself entertained for a good 2 hours doing that – I was possibly an elf in a former life?

Thanks to  my daughter’s boyfriend’s parents for their invite to their home for a drink last night. Wow, it must be getting serious?

Typically, having asked Lily if their home was wheelchair friendly, she said yes…. 2 steps up to the front door, and five down into their reception area must have passed her by when she scouted out the venue.

A few strong’ish guys and the job was done, though at any moment, I felt all 4 of us might go together – like in some Everest disaster movie.

Merry Christmas to all 8 of you reading this; I do hope that you have a lovely few days ahead.

Don’t forget that after you’ve finished being a child, giving is definitely better than receiving.

No doubt I’ll get the odd gift tomorrow, but my wheel has definitely made my Christmas already!

Rob Yukon – thinking of you, having arrived at your little holiday pad to find it flooded and without any ceilings anymore.. nasty surprise for sure, but it’s just stuff, and you’re insurance will make it all good again!

  1. Merry Christmas, Russ. Your blogs are cogent and reflective, and they present your experience of SCI as it is for you. What makes yours my fave tho is your sheer honesty, and omniscient wit. Wishing you more opportunities, and a few things to go your way, in 2017 X
